My watercolor journey really began in about 1995 after seeing the watercolors done by a cousin of mine. I took some beginner watercolor lessons while living in NJ, but after we retired and moved to Florida in 1998, I got more serious. I took lessons and workshops with several local, as well as some national known watercolorists. and I have never looked back! I work strictly in watercolors. Most of my works are florals, marine scenes, botanicals and Florida birds. I work mostly from my own photos, on 300# Arches paper and most of my paints are Daniel Smith brand.
I work on dry paper, and try to achieve the look I want by letting the paint mix and mingle on the paper, without painting layer upon layer. This tends to keep the colors fresh and clean and transparent. Working on the 300# paper, if I am not happy with the painting, I can simply turn the paper over and begin a new one.
Over the years, I have achieved Signature status with the Florida Watercolor Society, the Pennsylvania Watercolor Society and the Southern Watercolor Society. My works have also won several awards over the years, the most recent at the Backus Gallery “Best of the Best ” Juried Exhibit” in Ft. Pierce, where my painting won Second Place Watercolor.
I am currently an artist member of the Artists Guild Gallery in Vero Beach, FL, where we take shifts “gallery sitting”. We change and rearrange our works each month. This has been, and continues to be a wonderful experience.
I have done some art show judging, which I often find more difficult than I have thought it would be…so many wonderful works to choose from!
Laura Robinson
From her first watercolor painted in Rome, Italy in 1971, American artist Laura Robinson knew it was her medium. The vast selection of fine watercolor papers in art stores there, the uniquely warm light in Rome and the opportunity to study and live in the culture for a year gave her insights she would not get anywhere else in a junior year abroad. She graduated Magna cum Laude from Tyler School of Art in Philadelphia.
In recent years, after experimenting in many other painting mediums, she is back to watercolor. Laura has been a Signature Member of Florida Watercolor Society since 2015. Highlights of her awards are First Place in the Florida Watercolor Member Exhibition in 2021, the John Salchak Award in the National Watercolor Society Member Exhibition in 2021, Best of Show in the Artists’ Workshop Member Exhibitions in 2011, 2022, and 2024 and the Paulette Beakley
Award in the National Watercolor Society Member Exhibition in 2023. As a Board Member of the Volusia County Cultural Alliance, she is also active in supporting the artists and art patronage in her community.
Her inspiration comes from adventures traveling from the Dry Tortugas near Key West to the wild rocky coastline in Maine in a 38 foot sailboat and a 34 foot Mainship trawler. She uses color, value, edges, texture and interesting shapes to express the effects of light on water and the people seen in her travels.
