SUMMARY:2 Day Workshop with Barbara Brook "Know Your Pallet" March 12-13\, 2023
DESCRIPTION:After many years of painting with oils\, Barbara began watercolor painting in 1991 A watercolor self portrait\, painted by her grandmother\, was her inspiration. Barbara was intrigued by the delicate brush strokes and soft\, transparent colors\, so totally different from painting with oils. \nMost of her paintings are inspired by photos she has taken during travels around the U.S. as well as  Europe\, Asia\, and Great Britain. Often a scene will capture her attention because of shadows cast by sunlight. Whether it is a picture of nature\, doors and windows on old buildings\, intriguing faces\, or an Italian fishing boat she usually knows that it will eventually become a painting. \nBarbara tries to chose subjects to paint that will appeal to others for their beauty or to capture the emotion of a scene\, such as lights glistening through a crystal vase\, or a serene landscape. Catching a glimpse of people’s everyday life also appeals to her. Evoking an emotion in the viewer is her primary purpose for painting. Her passion for painting allows her to share that love with others. \nBarbara’s paintings have earned numerous awards and recognition. She is a member of the SouthernWatercolor Society\, the Transparent Watercolor Society of America\, the Watercolor Society of North Carolina\, where she lives\, as well as the Brevard Watercolor Society. Her paintings can be see on her  website: barbaras-watercolors.com. \n“My method of teaching is to demonstrate\, while teaching techniques\, and then to give individual attention while students repeat what has been demonstrated.” \nThis class is designed to teach various techniques\, unique to watercolor painting\, and to take the frustration out of color mixing. DESCRIPTION:FIRST WORKSHOP OF THE YEAR –\nBarbara Rios  be leading the January 28 workshop on Weaving. Not only will basic weaving be shown\, but more advanced weaving with a variety of shapes will be demonstrated. \n**New instruction:  on two 8″x8″ pieces of watercolor paper\, draw a simple object (butterfly\, flower\, fish\, etc.) on one and trace it to the other sheet. Paint one. Bring both sheets. \nMaterials: bring  several “failed” paintings to trade\, cut up or use the backs to paint on; scissors\, glue (Yes\, Elmers\, etc)\, masking tape\, clear tape\, and a ruler.  If you want to experiment\, bring unusual things you may want to weave into your piece (yarn\, leaves \, etc.)   Think outside the box! \nBring something to eat and drink. AND your regular watercolors supplies. SUMMARY:3- Day Workshop:  PAT DEWS    “ABSTRACTING NATURE”
DESCRIPTION:  \n \nPat Dews\, a graduate of The Fashion Institute of Technology\, New York City is a signature member and Dolphin Fellow of the American Watercolor Society\, the National Watercolor Society\, the National Collage Society\, the New Jersey Water Color Society\, and the Florida Watercolor Society. \nDews creates experimental works in watermedia on paper and canvas.  She paints the abstract essence of nature.  The shapes and textures of flowers\, rocks\, water\, crumbled walls\, rusty objects are translated into richly layered paint surfaces.  Collage is often integrated.  Dews skillfully juggles organic and geometric forms\, transparent and opaque paint – all held together by a basic abstract underlying shape.  It is this intricate dance\, rendered in strong color and value which produces her award-winning paintings.  When Pat paints\, it is a lively\, fascinating performance as she shows that\, with the simplest tools\, less can become more\, much more. \n \nPat’s awards include Second Place in the 33rd Annual Artist’s Magazine\, Abstract/Experimental category for her painting\, “Overpass.” Dews’ received the Mary Bryan Memorial Award at the American Watercolor Society 150th International Exhibition 2017\, the Edgar Whitney Memorial Award at the 149th American Watercolor International Exhibition\, 2016\, the Paul B. Remmey\, AWS\, Memorial Award at the 148th American Watercolor Society International Exhibition\, 2015\, and the China Zou Yinong Silver Award-China/NWS Small Image Exhibition\, 2016. DESCRIPTION: GETTING CREATIVE WITH YOUR “LEMONS” \nMini Workshop by Barbara Rios. Turn your disappointments into an opportunity to have FUN! Saturday\, May 28\, 10am – 3pm (extended time)\, Wickham Community Center\, bring a lunch! \nNot only did your painting not turn out to be a masterpiece\, but look at the money you wasted on expensive materials!  Don’t let this stifle the “child” in you to play\, experiment and be creative. What you perceive as a failure can be repurposed today or 10 years from now. Use the back\, add other materials\, throw it in the tub\, cut it up\,  gesso over it\, or keep to show how far you have advanced. How else do you expect to learn and finally create a something YOU are proud of? \nIf you are a watercolor purist\, your head may spin at all the materials that can be used to create “something [that] wasn’t before”.  Think like a child who\, as we know\, has absolutely no thought of cost! \nBring some of your “non Masterpieces” to work on\, exchange them with someone who sees promise. or to get the opinions of other artists.  You are encouraged to bring materials with which to experiment:  scissors\, acrylics\, tissue paper\, crayons\, markers\, scrap cloth\, pastels\, templates\, saran wrap\, found objects\, Mr. Clean pads\, rollers\, magazine cutouts\, WHATEVER you think will inspire you!  Barbara will provide many materials for your experimentation\, but a small contribution would be appreciated.  \nExamples of some of Barbara’s recreated artwork will be shown\, hopefully as inspiration. \nTo register\, please send email to Laurie at lbgriffi@att.net.  Attendance is limited to 30.  If something comes up and you are not able to attend please send Laurie an email and let us know so someone else can take your slot.

She will cover how to create natural skin tones and painting realistic eyes\, noses and mouths. If you are new to portraits this will be a great introduction or if you have been painting portraits a great refresher! \nBring your regular supplies\, watercolor paper and palette\, a #10 round brush with a good point and Winsor Newton paints\, New Gamboge (light yellow) and Scarlet Lake (red) which produce good flesh tones. Your other paints are fine. DESCRIPTION:This Event – Previously scheduled for November 2021 has been cancelled. \n\n \n\nVlad is no stranger to beautiful scenery. \nA Russian émigré\, he came to the US in the 1980s equipped with a classical art education from the Moscow School of Art and a masters’ degree in architecture from the Moscow Institute of Architecture.  He has traveled around the world to paint interesting cityscapes and landscapes.  But unlike many artists who are drawn to postcard perfect sites\, Vlad usually can be found around the back of a building\, along the street or in an alleyway\, capturing commonplace scenes. \nVlad is an exhibiting member of many art societies nationwide and a Signature member of the American Impressionistic Society\, the National Watercolor Society and the Florida Watercolor Society. \nHis work has been represented in print media in the USA and in Europe. \nVlad explains\, “The challenge with watercolor is to achieve the richness in color and not lose the transparency of watercolor”. \n

DESCRIPTION:Instructor – Jan Faerber \nInstructions:  \nIdeally you should use a quarter sheet  (15” x 11”) for this project.  If you open the attached line drawing in Adobe Acrobat select poster when you open the print dialog  and it will print the image across 2 8 1/2” x 11” pieces of paper that you can piece back together to trace. \nDraw lightly with pencil from lined picture given \, the actual leaves and their shadows on  11×15\, 140# watercolor paper.   \nShade lightly the shadows with pencil.  \nUse your regular palette and supplies.  It’s easier to have Payne’s gray or a substitute ready for the shadows\, but we will be dropping some colors into the shadows while they are wet.  We will be learning about shadows as they come close to objects and how they look the farther away they become.  There are diffuse shadows in the background   of the photo  from a palm tree that is not shown.   \n  \nWeb – Please contact Laurie Griffin\, lbgriffi@att.net for meeting information
